  • 'Rosa' comes from the Greek 'roden' meaning 'red', as the ancient rose was thought to have been crimson.
     

  • Two major types of oil-bearing roses used to be cultivated for the purposes of attar extraction, the pink and the white damask rose. The pink rose plantations brought almost 90 per cent of the total output. White roses were preferred for planting in higher altitudes. 

  • It is generally accepted that there are more than 5000 varieties of roses, yet only a few of them exhibit that marked fragrance that is sought by perfumeries.

  • There is evidence to show roses have existed for millions of years.  It is generally believed that the Rosa damascena originated in the Neolithic period as a hybridization of Rosa gallica and Rosa phoenicia - both of which have grown wild in Turkey for centuries.  There is also evidence that rose oil was prepared as early as 400 B.C. by macerating roses in olive oil. 

  • Ancient carved tablets tell of roses growing in the gardens of King Midas near Ankara, in 700 B.C. The legends tell of his frustration with the "Golden Touch" when he touched his Roses had them turn to gold.

  • Anicenna, the 10th century Persian physician, used the rose as his first plant to distill and a rose distillery existed in 1612 in Shiraz, Persia

  • At the end of 17th century the oil-bearing rose was cultivated in Bulgaria. The flowers were distilled to obtain rose water and small quantities of attar, floating over the rose water could also be collected.
